Step-by-Step: DIY Home Manicure Tutorial

Mastering the DIY home manicure is a GREAT skill in your arsenal of beauty tricks! It saves you loads of time and money and is REALLY convenient. And a nice little chunk of ‘me time’ too! And with this tutorial, we take away any guesswork so you can go straight ahead to beautiful, DIY nails!

Step 1: Lay out your tools! Like any craftsman, a nail technician needs her tools! Best to lay them out first, so once you start working, you don’t have to stop and scrabble around finding things, or realise that you don’t have an item. You will need:

  • Nail-polish remover and cotton swabs or pads
  • Nail clippers
  • Emery board and nail buffer
  • Cuticle pusher and nippers
  • Callous/cuticle remover
  • Hand/nail moisturizer
  • Base coat
  • Nail polish
  • Clear topcoat

Step 2: Remove any previously applied nail polish.

Step 3: Shape nails. Clip your nails, if necessary, then gently file them into shape. A slightly rounded nail shape or square-rounded edge is generally the best way to go but you can be as creative as you want.

Step 4: Soak away. Ahh … the relaxing part. Place your hands in a bowl of warm (not too hot) water and add a bit of your gentle face cleanser or shampoo to the water. Soaking the cuticle before trimming is crucial, but over-soaking actually damages skin and nails, so limit this step to three minutes or less.

Step 5: Pay attention to your cuticles. Dr. Hauschka Neem Nail & Cuticle Pen is a nurturing oil that penetrates the nail to strengthen and fortify while softening cuticles. Neem leaf extract strengthens keratin, fortifying nails against breakage. Apricot kernel oil penetrates and moisturises nails for greater flexibility and extracts of chamomile and anthyllis soften and renew cuticles; the strengthened nail grows healthily. Comes in a convenient, travel-ready pen! Gently trace the curve of each cuticle with felt tip to dispense oil. The beveled edge of the cap can be used to push back and shape cuticles.

Step 6: Remove excess cuticle and callouses around the nail. Using the cuticle pusher from your kit, gently push the cuticle back away from the nail, but don’t push it too far because it can damage nail growth or fray the cuticle.

Step 7: Moisturize. Massage a rich cream or silky oil into the cuticles and all over the hands to hydrate and replenish skin. A great hand and foot moisturizing kit can be found in Clarins Hand and Nail Treatment Cream Set.

Step 8: Prep for polish. Moisturizing ingredients left on the nail will prevent polish from adhering properly. Using a cotton swab or pad, apply nail-polish remover over the nail’s surface to remove any residue.

Step 9: Paint nails in layers. If you have weak or brittle nails, use a base coat of ridge-filling nail polish to shore up the nail. MAVALA Scientifique Nail Hardener allows soft, flaking or splitting nails to become healthy and strong. Its formula hardens the nail plate so that the nail can restore its normal growth!

Next, apply your color polish in layers, allowing each layer to dry between coats. Two coats of color polish followed by a top coat to add gloss should do the trick.

Step 10: Reapply moisturizer!
