How to Look after Acne-Prone Skin

Hey, if you are currently, or have ever been through periods of skin acne, just know you are NOT alone, and it happens to pretty much everyone at some stage. And a few blemishes can NOT dim YOUR shine!

The bane of acne often hits during puberty, at a time when we are often highly self-conscious about our outward appearance. Acne can be blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and nodules, and it can really affect the way you feel about yourself, producing a lot of very real anxiety. In a vicious cycle, acne produces additional emotional stress, and stress seems to worsen the breakouts of acne-prone skin. Learning about your skin and the correct skin care for breakouts will help to manage and minimise the severity of acne breakouts.

What is Acne?

Acne can show up at any time in our lives that our hormones produce excess oil, so it is not your ‘skin’ that causes acne, it is your hormones! However, acne can be made worse by dirt, irritation, stress and a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Sebum is the oily substance that mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria to clog the hair follicles on the skin, leading to a pimple or acne cyst. This is why gently keeping the skin clean and moisturised is so important.

The Mind-Body Connection

The mind and body are closely intertwined, and the brain and skin both make the same stress-related hormone that causes inflammation. In addition, stress increases production of the testosterone hormone, the imbalance of which is a major cause of acne. Another stress-related hormone, cortisol, can also cause your oil glands to go into overdrive, so if you’re acne-prone, you may notice more breakouts during stressful times.

Be Gentle on Your Skin

If your acne is quite severe, you may consider going to a dermatologist and using an intense product such as Roaccutane. However, before you go down this route, remember that this and other acne medications can have severe side effects, so try all other routes first!

There are some fantastic products available that are specifically formulated for acne prone skin, that can make the significant difference that you are after, without the nasty side effects!
