Whether you have been shaving for ages or have just started recently, it’s worth remembering a few tips and tricks for each area of your body so that you get a smooth, comfortable, long lasting shave and hopefully never any horrid nicks or cuts!
Pitting it out there
So, let’s start with the armpits. Especially in Summertime, these are on display a lot, and can be an awkward area to shave as the hair grows in all sorts of different directions! Because of this, it is best to use a razor with multiple blades, and a built-in moisture bar for easy gliding. Depending on the different directions of hair growth, you will need to check it out and then make sure you get all the angles you need for smooth, fuzz-free armpits.
Armpits can also be quite sensitive, so it’s best to shave the day before a big event or going away on holiday, as new environments and sun, sea and chlorine can cause a sensitivity reaction if armpits are newly shaven. It’s also best to shave before going to bed, as deodorant should not be applied straight after shaving, it will sting and possibly cause sensitive reactions.
Using a gently, natural deodorant without alcohol or harsh chemicals also helps protect the delicate underarm skin. Treat yourself to Dr. Hauschka Rose Deodorant – a carefully formulated combination of gentle, deodorising and nourishing ingredients. Rose water lends an elegant, delicate fragrance while Alchemilla essence helps to gently regulate perspiration, without harmful ingredients.
The largest surface area for shaving is the legs, and nothing beats the feeling of silky smooth legs! Always exfoliate the legs gently first. This removes dead skin cells, which gives you a closer shave AND stops the razor getting clogged with dead skin cells. Use a product with some essential oils for a fragrant, effective and nourishing exfoliation, like Bamford Botanic Sugar Polish. This sea salt and brown sugar scrub is enriched with invigorating essential oils in a rich shea butter balm with sesame and olive oil to deeply exfoliate your skin, leaving it nourished and radiant.
It’s also best to soak in the tub or shower for a few minutes before you shave, to open your pores and soften the hairs. But be sure not to make it too hot, or the pores will close and skin will become more sensitive. When shaving the legs you go against the grain, so that’s ankles upward. It is best to use shorter strokes – this will stop you from missing hairs!
The bikini area can also be tricky and a little sensitive. If you have let Winter months mean some ‘overgrowth’ there is no judgement here! However, it is best to trim hair first before you start shaving against the grain of the hair.
