We all have dreams, we all have things in our lives that we would like to change, things that we would like to improve. BUT, it can be easy to let these changes for the better stay in a place in our head, and not in our daily actions. By defining your dreams, breaking them down into goals and taking daily actions, no matter how small they may seem, you can turn your dreams from vague musings into concrete reality!
It is an invaluable exercise to spend some time assessing your year, and planning your 2018!
Great, so what’s the formula?
Well, it can be broken down into these 6 steps:
Honestly examining your current life is the first step involved in changing for the better. Identify the areas of your life that are problematic, and the areas of your life that are successful.
Organize the plan
When you do step 1 and 2, a picture will emerge that shows the gaps between where you are and where you want to be. The plan you develop to address the gaps is crucial, and need to be orderly and built upon one another.
The new behaviors that you will need to support your dreams. Life is about consistently learning, you are never done! You will need to learn the actions and behaviors that are the future you.
Attach value to the behaviors and actions that drive the future vision. In other words, examine and adjust your reward systems you have set up for yourself and make sure they align with your goals. Make changes that make reverting back to old behaviors hard. This step is imperative for the sustainability of change.
Evaluate and adjust. Even the most careful planning will need adjustments once put into action. The important component is being willing to evaluate and adjust the plan as needed to accomplish the end goal of the future vision. If you start the process understanding there will be adjustments, those adjustments will be less likely to derail you.
Once you have spent some time on your examination, your thinking, your gaps in the vision and the breakdown of logical steps you will need to take to close the gaps, learn your new behaviours and attach the correct value to them, as well as have the flexibility to adjust as needed to stay on track, you will have MASTERED following your dreams! Now THAT is something worth spending time on!
