Beauty Lesson: Choosing the Perfect Lip Color for Your Skin Tone

“If you’re sad – add more lipstick and attack.”

Ok Coco, got it! But someone else said:

“Give a woman the right lipstick and she can conquer the world!”

So, let’s listen to both of these wise sayings, and focus on the perfect color for YOU! Because what looks amazing on Taylor Swift might just look “all wrong” on you. And that is because of our natural skin tone, and the kinds of undertones that show through our skin that will make one lipstick color make you look like a goddess, and your friend look like she’s a little ill!

Skin Color

Start the journey by examining your skin in natural lighting to decide on your basic complexion description – fair, light, medium, tan or deep. Focus on the skin around your jaw line for highest accuracy. You will have fair skin if your skin is very pale or translucent and you burn very easily. You may have freckles and some redness. Light-skinned ladies have pale skin that burns easily and then tans. A medium skin tone means you tan easily and generally don’t burn or have very sensitive skin. To describe your skin as tan it will be tan or olive in color and you rarely burn and look tanned even in the winter. A deep tone means your skin is dark and you never get sunburned. Your hair is possibly black or dark brown.

Skin Tone

Another indicator is the color of the veins on the inside of your wrist. This helps to tell if you have a warm, neutral, or cool skin tone.

  • Blue or purple veins indicate you have a cool skin tone.
  • Green veins mean you have a warm skin tone.
  • If you can’t really see if the veins are green or blue then you most probably have a neutral skin tone and can choose colors from both the cool and warm spectrum. People with olive skin usually have neutral undertones.

Still not sure? Never fear, there is another test! Which looks better on you – gold or silver jewelry? Gold jewelry looks best with warm skin tones, silver jewelry looks best on cool skin tone and both look good on a more neutral skin tone.

One of the most flattering lip shades is the one that is one to two shades deeper than your natural lip color.

The Final Effect

The next consideration is whether you want your lips to look smaller or larger. Dark shades will actually make your lips look smaller, while lighter shades can add plumpness. Lipstick with a matte finish can also cause lips to look thinner, while glosses and shimmery shades can make them look fuller.

So, you can be very much guided by your skin color and tone, but ultimately, wear the look that YOU love as there are always exceptions to every rule!

Ideas To Try

If you have fair or light skin, try light pink, coral, peach, nudes, or beige. If you have cool undertones, try a soft mocha and nude. Warm undertones, try pale pinks or a nude with a little peach. Rose, mauve, or berry shades flatter medium skin, while shades of pink or cranberry look super cool on cool skin tones. For a warm undertone? Experiment with copper or bronze. Tan skin glows with an orange undertone, as well as coral, or deep pink. If you have a deep complexion, try browns or purples like walnut, caramel, plum, or wine.

And what about the all-time classic red lipped vamp?

Wear it with pride. Most women can pull this off, regardless of age, skin, hair, eye, or lip color. Yeah!

Texture

A final word on choosing lip color is that of texture. The finish on the lipstick has a major effect on the overall look. A matte finish has no shine or shimmer and will fully cover your lips, and can have a drying effect on your lips. The payoff is big though, if you’re looking for a bold color, because all shades of mattes create a rich lip.

Satins or crèmes will have a color depth like mattes, but the finishes have more moisture and a slicker texture that won’t last as long as a matte. The finish on a satin or crème can be natural, or introduce shimmer or shine to your lips. This makes them a great option for day or night in almost any shade.

Try some of these awesome lipstick brands to ensure you get a high quality formulation using gentle ingredients, no matter what color or texture you choose!
