Fitness Corner – Simple Workout after Work

We all know we need to work out several times a week for optimal health. Exercise makes us feel great, look great and improves all round energy and health. But, it’s easy to get into a rut and skip our workouts – because we’re tired, or stressed. But these are the very reasons that we SHOULD make the effort to get that workout in! And if you’re not an early morning person, then after work is the perfect time to get in a workout and wind down in good, healthy style.

 

Sitting at a desk all day, sitting in a car or public transport and staring at screens can play havoc with your body, and often your back. Muscles become tight and inflexible, which can age you and cause pain.

Six Minutes to Stretched Out

This simple stretching routine will take 6 minutes after work and loosen your lower back and open your hip flexors. Spend two minutes on each for instant relief!

Downward Dog

Start on your hands and knees, then push your hips up towards the ceiling. Straighten your arms and draw your shoulder blades in, pushing your feet against the floor.

Hip Flexor Stretch

From your knees, place one foot forward in front of you. Keeping your back upright and foot planted, lean forward through your hips to stretch the front of your rear leg. Repeat with the opposite side.

Glute Stretch

Lie on your back with your knees bent. Lift one ankle up and rest it across the opposite knee. Reach underneath the lower leg and pull up towards your chest. Repeat with the opposite leg.

If you can follow this up with a run or exercise class, so much the better, but if not, just 6 minutes of stretching will keep you more flexible.
